Las Vegas, the city of endless neon nights, and the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, as it’s known, has a key draw card: the headlining residency. Elvis, Sinatra, Liberace, Céline, Prince, Shania—many of the most iconic names in the business have taken a break from touring to enjoy an extended run on the ‘Strip’. Now, Jennifer Lopez has also stepped up to take her place among the pantheon of pop and rock gods with her new three-year concert residency, All I Have, which opened on January 20 at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino’s AXIS Theater.
Performing her biggest hits with a five-piece band and sixteen dancers, Ms Lopez shone with megawatt star power, thanks in no small part to the state-of-the-art tech and lavish costuming that enhanced her showmanship to perfection. Masses of hand-applied Swarovski crystals shimmered on a series of bespoke looks created by longtime friend and collaborator, Donatella Versace. The colorful ‘BRONX’ bomber jacket, crystallized silver sneakers and pink baseball cap set a high-energy tone in a playful nod to her ‘Jenny From the Block’ roots, along with perhaps the biggest wow outfit of the evening: a fabulous floor-length white feather and crystal-encrusted duster coat.
An exceptional level of craftsmanship goes into staging a show like this. To give an idea, it took over 1,400 hours to hand-apply 260,000 crystals in Crystal, Amethyst, Light Siam and Jet to the costumes. The set boasts another 75,000 crystals, including the grand staircase, six giant crystal swag drapes inspired by the 2014 Oscars set, and a bespoke chandelier made with over 700 crystal strands.
