Wallpaper* is the international style bible renowned for its tastemaker status, so when it hands you an award, you know you’ve arrived. That’s why we are so delighted to announce that this year’s Wallpaper* Design Awards prize for ‘Best Showstopper’ has just been given to the unique Gabriel chandelier. Designed by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and shimmering with Swarovski crystals, it’s the first permanent contemporary piece to be installed in Paris’s famous 17th-century Palace of Versailles. The remarkable LED installation is suspended over the main staircase in the form of elegantly looped ropes of light. At a height of twelve meters (forty foot) and weighing half a tonne, it is formed of 800 interlocking Swarovski crystal modules threaded along a stainless steel skeleton.
It was the juxtaposition of modern, graceful lines against the backdrop of Baroque splendor that secured this much-coveted award from a panel featuring an impressive roster of art and design A-listers. Offering some of the most discerning eyes in the industry were pop sensation-turned-fashion mogul Victoria Beckham; restaurateur and interior designer Michael Chow; Wallpaper’s Designer of the Year 2013, Ron Gilad; film director Spike Jonze; architect Thom Mayne; and art dealer Thaddaeus Ropac. Richly deserved!
